KEYWORDS:  Health and welfare, vehicles, tobacco

1. Purpose

1.1  The purpose of this policy is to prohibit the use of tobacco by any person in any Salt Lake City owned or leased vehicle.

2. Definitions

2.1 City Owned or Leased Vehicle – Any vehicle paid for by and registered to Salt Lake City Corporation.

2.2 Authorized Employee or Volunteer – Any authorized Salt Lake City employee or authorized Salt Lake City volunteers possessing a valid Utah driver’s license.

3. Background

3.1          The health and welfare of all employees of Salt Lake City are of paramount importance.  Studies have proven that secondhand tobacco smoke significantly increases the potential for pulmonary and cardio-vascular diseases for those who do not smoke, but who inadvertently breathe in tobacco-related toxins.  Also, the presence of cigarette smoke damages the vehicle’s interior and decreases the vehicle’s value.

4. Policy

4.1         Due to the concern for employee health and working conditions, smoking is not allowed in any City owned or leased vehicle.

5. Enforcement

5.1         Each Department Director/Supervisor is responsible for ensuring drivers and passenger in City owned or leased vehicles comply with this policy.
