1. General

1.1        It is the Policy of Salt Lake City to reduce chemical use whenever practicable.

 

1.2        Definitions

 

A. Integrated Pest Management: A decision-making process for managing pests that uses monitoring to determine pest injury levels and combines biological, cultural, physical, and extensive knowledge about pests, such as infestation thresholds, life histories, environmental requirements and natural enemies to complement and facilitate biological and other natural control of pests. The method uses the least toxic synthetic pesticides only as a last resort to controlling pests.

 

B. Pesticide: Any substance or mixture of substances intended for preventing, destroying, repelling or mitigating any pest.

 

C. Practicable: Sufficient in performance and available at a reasonable price.

 

2. Certified Environmentally Preferable Cleaning Products

 

2.1        Whenever practicable, cleaning products shall be certified with the Green Seal or Ecologo program under their referenced environmental standards, available from Purchasing or the Sustainability Department.

 

3. Pesticide Use

 

3.1        The city, in carrying out its operations, shall be aware that pesticides are potentially hazardous to human and environmental health. City departments shall give preference to effective and reasonably available non-pesticide alternatives when considering the use of pesticides on city property.

 

3.2        All city departments that use pesticides shall create and implement an integrated pest management plan with the intent of reducing pesticide use on city facilities and properties.

 

3.3        Pesticides shall be used in the most conservative quantity and dilution, and stored, transported and disposed of in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.

 

3.4        All pesticide applications will be recorded in a log with applicable data and kept on file to track pesticide usage.

 

3.5        Departments and divisions shall not use herbicides and pesticides to manage or eliminate invasive weeds in any city’s culinary watershed area, as defined by City Code 17.04, or riparian area as defined by City Code 21A.34.130, without a permit for such use issued by the Director of Public Utilities.

 

3.6        Use of herbicides or pesticides on invasive weeds must be done in accordance with City Code 17.04.375 Herbicide, Pesticide, and Fertilizer Restrictions.
