6.01.05     Petroleum Storage Tanks

1. General

 

1.1        All departments that own regulated storage tanks containing petroleum products shall operate those tanks in compliance with applicable federal, state and local regulations.

 

1.2        Definitions

 

A. Petroleum:  Gasoline, diesel, motor oil, transmission oils, or lubricants.

 

B. Release: Spilling, leaking, pumping, pouring, emitting, emptying, discharging, injecting, escaping, leaching, dumping, or disposing of substances into the environment.  This also includes abandoned or discarded barrels, containers, and other receptacles containing hazardous materials or substances.

 

1.3        Applicable departments shall adopt procedures to ensure that:

 

A. A list of storage tanks, and their capacity and status, is maintained;

 

B. Permits are complete for new and existing systems;

 

C. Release detection systems are operating;

 

D. Routine inspections are completed;

 

E. Spill response and emergency systems are in place; and

 

F.  Required records are kept.
